Inspiration

This was a really fun assignment. For LD, we had to map out our art influences and here’s mine. This is like looking into my brain!

Knit Fit!

Knit Fit from Derek Desierto on Vimeo.

It’s here! It’s finally here! Our baby! Our group film!

It’s a wild and wacky story about a sassy grandma who gets interrupted during the season finale of her favourite tella novella. Not one to miss an episode, she figures out a way to see what happens to Maria and Valentino. One way or another. Dun dun dun!!!!

A big GRACIAS to everyone who participated in making this beautiful bundle of joy. It was an experience I won’t soon forget.

Scene mock ups

Some early scene mock ups for my thesis film.

Fourth Year Pitch Package

1 ½ weeks left until our group film is due!!! I’m excited to see everyone’s films all complete. Until then, here’s my 4th year pitch package for story class. At this point, I’m a bit creatively drained so I decided to just stick with one of my first ideas which is more fully formed. I still really like this idea and there’s a good chance that it will be my film but we shall see what happens in the summer! Inspiration might strike and you’ll see something completely different from me come September.

Nate Wragg's Character Design for Production

This was my last week for Nate Wragg's Character Design for Production class. It was a good class. It really got me back into the habit of designing. :)

Cartoon Zen

We had a snow day today and so all classes were cancelled. I ended up just working on my life drawing assignment all day instead. I came in with a different mind set this time in approaching my work. I wanted to thoroughly enjoy the experience and mentally just stay in that "cartoon zen" mind state. There wasn't a lot of second guessing myself. I just went with what felt right and if it didn't, I stopped it. Doing that made this such a pleasure to do. And I’m looking forward to getting back into my cartoon zen soon.

Three Muskateers

I had some free time tonight and decided to do some doodling. But for a good half hour, I couldn’t draw anything.

Does anyone else get that? It’s like a sort of stage fright. An art fright! That happens to me sometimes now. When I give myself time to draw for fun, I freeze up! Sometimes from not knowing what to draw and other times with my own self-inflicted pressure of wanting to produce something “good”. The way I get around it now is immerse myself with things I love to kick myself out of that mind space. Whether it’s using music or researching something I love and getting lost in it. Soon enough, I forget about the “art fright” and get into drawing.

After tonight’s art fright, I ended up with this. It started with wanting to draw an old painter and then I remembered Vermeer and his funny hats. One thing led to another and I ended up with these three musketeers which I really like! I’m happy I stuck it out.

Character with a story

It’s my first week of my CGMA class with Nate Wragg. This week is about developing a character with story. Mine is inspired by my cultural anthropology teacher, Anna. Which, sidenote, is a fantastic class! I highly suggest it for those who need to take it as an elective class at Sheridan!

Walk & Talk

Lastly, here’s my ToonBoom assignment from first term. We had to do a walk & talk with our rigged character so I decided to include my MLA I did for layout class as well. Two birds with one stone kind of thing. For those in first and second year, it would be wise for you to do that! It allows you more time to do other things for either your group film or portfolio for internships. :)
